We drove south through
the mountains of West Virginia and on to North Carolina’s Piedmont
region. Piedmont means foot of the mountains. The part of North
Carolina we stayed in was a beautiful area, nice and green, and the weather
was even warmer then it had been in Ohio. The visit to North Carolina
was our first and I was excited about speaking and singing and drawing
pictures and telling wildlife stories to the children there.
At McLeansville Elementary the 400 students were so
responsive I felt like I’d been there before.
They were all good gobblers and helped me gobble in
my “Talkin Turkey” song. The library had a beautiful powerpoint
presentation using info and graphics from my web site. We had a great
lunch and a wonderful day.
The Canterbury school in Greensboro had made a study
of owls for the walls and used Crinkleroot’s 25 more animals to
do their own facts and pictures. We walked on their green lawns and were
even given a tour of their pond trail. At Caterbury the students learned
that if you study one animal, you learn about many others in the process.
We visited the Piedmont Environmental Center on our
day off and hiked the hilly woods where Deanna heard a hen turkey clucking.
We also spent times at City Park watching the fishing boats.
