The
Leib Elementary students had colored my coloring pages and their library
was decorated with beautiful large renditions of Crinkleroot and his canoe,
animal tracks, and pictures of animals with facts from my “All About”
books.
At Dover Elementary Crinkleroot was on the library
door with a flock of geese flying over his head. It was beautiful!
Before we left York, we visited the Harley Davidson
Motorcycle factory and took the tour. After which Deanna and I sat on
a great big Electra Glide and both felt right at home. 39 years ago, we
had dated on an old Triumph motorcycle. The Harley plant brought back
those wonderful memories. We ordered a brand new Harley “Road King”
for future Sunday summer drives. Deanna picked out the color. Black cherry
with red pinstriping. It will be delivered to our farm in Vt. this March.
The last visit on our 2004 tour was at Penn-Alexander
School in West Philadelphia. The entire school took time from their studies
to assemble in the gym and listen to my songs and wildlife stories. It
was a sunny day and the sun was streaming in through all the windows of
the school.
From the country to the suburbs to the city, this
year’s Marathon Book Tour was a resounding success! Deanna and I
wish to thank all the librarians, teachers, parents and students who made
our visit so enjoyable. And thank you to all the men and women who set
up the drawing easels and microphones and kept the gyms, cafeterias, and
auditoriums warm and comfortable. Thanks to the gym teachers who gave
up their space to allow for my visit. And thanks for the early morning
rides and late afternoon drop-offs. If we had to find all of these schools
and libraries ourselves, Deanna and I would have been exhausted halfway
through the tour.
We hope to visit New Jersey and Pa. Again and
often in the future. We have roots in that part of the country and enjoyed
seeing old friends and relatives in between engagements.
It was great fun!
